Testing the Goldilocks house: Not too hot, not too cold and inexpensive to run
Sydney Morning Herald Senior Reporter, Julie Powell, visited the Ice Box Challenge Sydney this week and met with Architect Caroline Pidcock, co-founder of Architects Declare and John Beurle, Board Director at APHA.
“We can make our homes net zero now. Not only does it have the huge benefit of stopping necessary carbon going into the air, and providing comfortable healthy homes, it hardly costs anything to run,” Ms Pidcock said. “Once you properly insulate a house, and seal it up, you don’t lose energy or waste energy through cracks between windows, walls and floors.”
Speaking in the rain this week, Mr Beurle said Passive Houses had “no condensation, no mould, no dust. These things are virtually eliminated. The whole idea is to keep temperature inside at the point where moisture never forms. That’s the magic of having the right insulation in the fabric of the building.”
