COP26 | Glasgow, 1-12 November 2021
Glasgow is hosting the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26), which will bring groups together to accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.
Passive House at COP26
The Passive House standard is taking centre stage in Glasgow, featuring in several events and participating in the Global Alliance for Building and Construction's programme.
The International Passive House Association (iPHA) is organising a free tour on 8 November, visiting highly energy efficient buildings across the city. Additionally, attendees have the opportunity to take part in a Passive House workshop. Many events at COP26 are live streamed for remote viewing.
11 November marks the Building & Cities Day at COP26, a full day dedicated to sustainable transformation of the built environment. High level of energy efficiency is the key to better buildings: climate protection in the building sector will only be successful if buildings use significantly less energy for heating and cooling. The Passive House standard has proven to deliver with successfully completed projects worldwide. The concept and numerous examples will be presented at COP26, encouraging more decision makers to follow suit and to implement Passive House as pathway to achieving climate targets.

APHA at COP26
APHA's Chairperson, Chris Nunn, was a speaker at the joint presentation ”Efficiency: The First Renewable Energy" at COP26 in the digital EU Pavilion. This event took place at 13:00 GMT on 5 November 2021.
Chris spoke about association growth and capacity building, Passive House in hot climates, energy prices, and the need for energy efficiency. Please find the catch up video below.
APHA CEO, Paul Wall, sat down with Giorgia Tzar, Association Manager of the International Passive House Association this week about how an Aussie from regional Victoria is leading the charge for Passive House internationally.
Giorgia, who is currently in Glasgow for COP26, talks about her work at the event including UN Climate Change Virtual Conference of Youth and the Efficiency: The First Renewable Energy campaign that also featured speaker Chris Nunn, APHA Chairperson. Paul and Giorgia also discuss the Build Better Pavilion and awards, particularly Melbourne’s Monash University Woodside Building, one of the most efficient and innovative teaching buildings of its type in the world - which is also an award nominee at the event.

World leaders are gathering in Glasgow for COP26. Globally, buildings consume over a third of the energy produced and are responsible for 40% of global energy-related carbon emissions – the construction industry has a massive role in reducing this. COP26 Built Environment Virtual Pavilion
Following an international Open Call, seventeen exemplary sustainable projects and a centrepiece installation, including Monash Woodside Building for Technology and Design, Melbourne, have been selected to feature in Build Better Now, a virtual reality online exhibition demonstrating the opportunities for tackling the Climate Emergency and limiting the environmental impact of the buildings and cities we inhabit. Build Better Now will act as a global call for climate action and is supported by a coalition of over 100 partner organisations from the built environment industry.
