  • Coming in at 8.3 stars under the Nathers rating system, this Certified Passive House is only the second in all of South Australia, proving that to get certification is no easy feat. Many hours of scrutinising construction details and the best way to make the house as efficient as possible was contributed by the team.

In terms of features we have designed this all electric home with multiple generations in mind. It has a two person lift installed, wide hallways and doors and an open plan kitchen for easy access. This home could easily be lived in by a family, couple or for aging in place.

The home has 140mm external wall frames, inslab insulation, R4.0 external walls, R6.0 ceiling and between floors, R2.4 internal walls. It has vapour permeable membranes, roof with above sheathing ventilation, an internal airtightness membrane installed with air gap between the plasterboard and membrane for ventilation and services.

The glazing ratio is 23% but the house was designed in a way that natural light did not need to be compromised to make it efficient, locally made UPVC windows were used, and uniquely double glazed windows were able to be used instead of the typical triple glazing, another fallacy eliminated that you must have triple glazing to create this type of efficiency.

This solar powered house currently uses only 7.6kw per day maintaining a comfortable temperature of 20 degrees. Most volume built homes are unable to maintain their temperature, they accept their heating and cooling dollars being lost and having to restart all over again. This Passive House has the evidence and practicality of a truly efficient home.

  • The site was selected because of its seemingly ideal, but in reality poor solar orientation. The north and south orientations of the property are long, however, there is a two storey home completely shading the house to the north and the house has east-facing, elevated views. This made it the perfect place to show the power of the Pillars of a Passive House in practice.

Thermal bridge free construction is all about planning, you cannot construct a Passive House without all elements and potential complications largely worked out prior to construction. This meant a lot of time in design making sure all wall build ups worked well and would not compromise the certification process.
