Background

Aiming for Passive House certification on both Scamander Passive A and Scamander Passive B, the initial build, House A, will be constructed using CLT panels and wood fiber insulation and will also be an exercise in the viability of cost effective construction for this building type.

Designed by Spectura Studio as a Building Designer and CPHD, Owner/Client Matthew Purves will also be undertaking the project management & contract administration for the construction stage. East Coast Passive House is the the contracted builder.

The approach to the technical design elements of the building is one that allows for the majority of the construction to utilise systems that allow for a lighter physical load during construction, reducing labour costs.

Brief

Designer, builder and client all in one - the brief was essentially to provide a well performing building at an affordable cost with an interesting form that would be able to maximise the interface with the surrounding environment.

Challenges

Supply issues and escalating material costs are making this a challenging project to achieve on the initial budget allowance. Location also adds to the challenge with the east coast of Tasmania only having a small population.
